Who produces domestic labor in contemporary society? In response to Wages Against Housework, I think we should consider Claudia Cano's work Rosa, The Cleaning Lady, exploring the stereotypes of Latinx immigrants and their role in domestic labor.
As a performance artist, Cano developed two alter egos to speak about the social dichotomy that exists within Latina immigrants. “Carmencha - La Rica” (The Rich Girl), is an affluent runaway, the escaped the horrors of a corrupted system only to live her life at the bottom of a glass. On the other hand, “Rosa Hernandez - La Chacha” (The Cleaning Lady) immigrated to the United States to earn a living and possibly build a better life. Through these characters and performances, Cano attempts to understand her own role in American society.
